The National Art School acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional owners on whose lands, water and skies we meet and share.

Ben King

Alongside my studio work for the Master of Fine Art degree in ceramics, I have been making music using the sampling method. This process has largely influenced the way I worked on my mosaics. In the similar way to sampling various sounds and music while creating tracks, I was incorporating old ceramic plates, as well as newer tiles in my mosaic works. It felt incredibly freeing to use both sounds and objects to create a puzzle for myself to solve, almost like I am a third party overseeing the construction of a building.

The tiles I made are squares and rectangles about the size of my hand. I was using slip and underglaze in each tile as a small singular painting and using different gestures and imagery on each. It was all depending on the day or what was happening in my life; they were small enough to finish quite quickly and honestly. They feel like individual diary entries of my year.

I have also taken moulds of various toys I have collected throughout my life and made copies of them. These moulded pieces will serve to section off the walls in the mosaic, like warriors protecting the memories inside.
