Drawing on art historical links to minimalism, Houghton’s work engages the viewer’s perceptive capacities, instigating a conversation between the formal qualities of the grid, and atmospheric qualities of light and colour. Drawings that induce visual indeterminacy are created by layering watercolour washes to produce semi-transparent forms that absorb and reflect light. Highly resolved processes allow the artist to manipulate large volumes of watercolour to produce a range of resonant works that encourage slow looking. Having completed both undergraduate and master’s degrees at National Art School, Houghton is now in the final stages of her doctorate.
